When pretty much any space could become a performance venue at the Edinburgh Fringe, the imagination is given the freedom to roam, after all, who says a little storage container can’t be an 80,000-seat world class concert venue? Because in the vivid, colourful and all together wonderful imagination of comedian and musical performer Katie Pritchard, that is exactly what Assembly’s Roxy Boxy becomes in her one women show ‘I Kiss The Music’.

In this production, Pritchard is an international superstar opening her brand-new concert in this massive space, and the audience are invited to be a part of the action in an exclusive behind the scenes look. The show is crammed full of creative, out there and hilarious musical numbers, 14 songs and an encore, to be precise and each has the audience in fits of giggles. The concert is pieced together with costume changes, lots of props, unique instruments, and audience interaction. For example, one audience member becomes a judge for Guiness world records, deciding whether or not Pritchard breaks the record for the number of body roles whilst another is enlisted to be the grand concerts stunt coordinator.
With the topics of songs ranging from not wanting to fill out forms for online dating profiles, and a love for music to hot dogs, this show is wonderfully silly whilst having moments of relatability as audience members may find themselves thinking ‘oh yeah, I agree with you there Katie’. The songs are very funny and equally catchy, with audiences invited to dance along and join in throughout in this highly interactive piece.
Sections of the show are connected through audio description, illustrating Pritchard’s costume changes and painting the image of the set and lighting of this grand huge concert being changed between musical numbers, all of which adds extra hilarity to proceedings. The homemade costumes along with the variety of props perhaps harmlessly pokes fun at the concert industry, where shows are put on with tens if not hundreds of workers, high value costumes and a plethora of special effects. Here Pritchard does everything, the props, the special effects, the sound, everything. She is a one women band, quite literally, and the audience is cheering her on from start to finish.
‘Katie Pritchard: I Kiss the Music’ is an hilarious hour of music, fun and absolute silliness, lighthearted and comical from start to end as audiences are invited to join Pritchard in simply having a great time sharing a love for music and celebrating concert culture. And if you fancy more musical fun from Pritchard, you can also see her in ‘A Jaffa Cake Musical’ at the fourth at Pleasance Courtyard.
